The discovery of a new well or water spring at the Annobón hotel in Ájobo has sparked controversy on the island. Although this find promises access to drinking water, its extraction raises serious concerns about the stability of the island and the source of life for the flora, fauna and local inhabitants.
This irresponsible exercise of the dictatorship of Equatorial Guinea in the territory of the Republic of Annobón implies not only the violation of its sovereignty but also the drilling of rock layers, putting at risk the structure and stability of the island and the lake, which is the main source of water for life in Annobón. The presence of foreign mercenaries with heavy machinery, under the direction of the invading government, for the personal benefit of a company, reflects the lack of consideration for the environmental and humanitarian consequences.
The water from the new well is destined for a supposed hotel under construction, while the local population continues to receive stagnant and contaminated water, generating diseases. This act of poisoning is part of the extermination plan carried out by the state and the government of the dictatorship of Theodore Obiang Nguema Mbasogo for more than five decades. It is unequivocal proof of the subjugation and impoverishment of the Annobonese population, both in Equatorial Guinea and on the island of Annobón itself.
The situation in Annobón is one more manifestation of the negligence and systematic repression suffered by the Annobonese people under the dictatorship of Equatorial Guinea. Despite calls for international solidarity and the urgency of the humanitarian situation on the island, the government of Obiang persists in its oppression and exploitation of resources. It is essential that the international community takes measures to demand respect for human rights in Annobón and provide humanitarian assistance to the affected population. Access to basic services such as drinking water, medical care and decent living conditions must be a priority, but this will only be possible with respect for the sovereignty of the Republic of Annobón. The fight of the Annobonese people for independence and dignity continues, and it is everyone's responsibility to defend their right to a better life.
