Due to its deplorable service, residents of Annobón began to demonstrate against the Electricity Society of Equatorial Guinea (SEGESA), calling for a rebellion against payment for this service.
Through WhatsApp messages, islanders claimed to be fed up with paying for electricity service regularly without being able to access it: “Those who claim to be leaders of Annobón do nothing towards Annobón, although they have prohibited us from telling the truth,” they began by indicating, in reference to the dictatorship of Obiang, which keeps the entire territory of Annobón militarized and in a serious humanitarian crisis.
«Every time we go from worse to terrible. There is no turning back. Of the 24 hours in the day, it only benefits from electricity for twelve hours, that is, from 19.00:7.00 p.m. to XNUMX:XNUMX a.m. And this is day after day, month after month, suffering this shit," they added.
The CEGESA service prevents the use of basic appliances such as refrigerators, spoiling the scarce food available on the island, due to permanent interruptions in the service and its low quality. For this reason, the Annobonese called for subscribers to stop paying for the service starting in March: “The decision has been made. Spread this news because we are tired of the mockery. Annobón deserves his freedom.”
Finally, as a result of the situation, the prime minister of the Republic of Annobón also expressed himself, Orlando Cartagena Lagar, who through X tweeted: “Claiming our rights and defending our freedom are forms of sovereignty. Go ahead with the popular protests in Annobón. Conformism, I don't care about politics, have brought centuries of suffering, abandonment and foreign domination. Always with respect and without violence.”
